Las Vegas has problems to find new employees

Las Vegas Strip is experiencing a building boom, which is expected to add at least four new resorts to the famous street and approximately 45,000 more hotel rooms by 2012. Casino operators are confident that they will be able to fill the rooms with guests and the casinos with eager gamblers but they are worried about finding enough employees for their staff.

According to a report presented by Deutsche Bank Securities, about 113,500 workers will be needed to fill the positions created by the new resorts. This means that, if the current growth rate continues unabated, about 25,000 jobs will be left unfilled.

“Older casinos will be hit by the open positions as qualified workers flee for newer and more attractive opportunities,” Bill Lerner, author of the report for Deutsche Bank, explained. “A job shift took place during the most recent casino hiring wave in 2005 and 2006. Wynn Las Vegas, the South Coast (now called South Point) and the Red Rock Resort hired workers from competing casino properties.”

Currently, the construction activity is very busy at The Strip. By the end of this year, Las Vegas Sands Corp. plans to open its $1.8 billion Palazzo while Wynn Resorts recently began the construction of its resort, Encore. MGM Mirage’s CityCenter is also under construction and Boyd Gaming Corp., is preparing the former Stardust site for Echelon Place, a $4 billion project.
